Description

Compelling; moving and eloquent; one of the great novels of the 20th century is brought to the stage for the first time. Winner of the 1987 Booker Prize; Dame Penelope Livelyrsquo;s Moon Tiger is a haunting story of loss and desire.Claudia Hampton is a popular historian; a strong; beautiful and difficult woman. Now in her seventies; she is plotting her greatest work ndash; a history of the world. She looks back over her life growing up between the wars and remembers the people who have shared its triumphs and tragedies. There is Gordon; her adored brother; Jasper; the charming; untrustworthy lover and father of her daughter; and Tom; her one great love; both found and lost during the El Alamein campaign when she worked as a war correspondent. Against a background of world events; Claudiarsquo;s own remarkable story provokes a sharp combination of sadness; shock and amusement.

There is a lot of technical material in the interviews that I dont think makes much sense to anyone who doesnt play; but its pretty easy to skim over that if it is not what one is looking for. Its also not very current; but Im still glad I got the book; as Im enjoying reading the interviews with the bassists whose music Ive know for a long time; and am finding it equally interesting to get acquainted with musicians I was not previously aware of.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Old School Bass PlayerBy PaulI have enjoyed this book a lot. many of the bass players listed in this book are influences to me. I love my bass and I love playing it. To any bass player who has a passion for musical thunder; you need to be inspired and this book will help.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. 30 of the greatest bass names; all in one bookBy Bill M.A collection of 30 separate articles; each about a big name in the bass world. The names span lots of styles too. And whatever your style; I think the whole book is worth reading; because I even picked up some good ideas from players or genres that I wasnt particularly into. Some of the articles focused more on the artistss equipment; for some it was their band history; others it was more focused on their style. This is actually why I didnt give it a full 5 stars. The Chris Squire article; for example; is just him explaining what equipment he uses; and as much as Im interested in what other players are using to get their sounds; I would also like to have gotten a few playing tips from Squire. Still; its a great "encylopedia" of sorts for any bass player; and I believe that any player who reads the articles will learn something helpful.
