She. I believe. still works for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation as the Hudson River Estuary Coordinator where she oversees the Hudsons rigorous fish and wildlife conservation program. This book was originally titled: The Hudson River Highlands. published in 1991. at the time the author was completing a Masterrsquo;s Degree. In 2008. the book was expanded and updated and became this book. The Hudson: Americarsquo;s River.I have always had an interest in the Hudson. most of which began because of the role the Hudson played in the Revolutionary War. of which I am always interested. Last year. I became even more interested in it as I made (and still make) short daily ferry rides from Manhattan to NJ for work. A few months ago. I was at a park in the Hudson Valley (Kingsland Point Park. I think) and the Hudson is just spectacular in this location. You can look from the park railings to a landscape that is NOT dotted with buildings or other manmade structures other than the Tappan Zee Bridge and a small lighthouse. There were waves crashing up against the rocks and the vastness of the river in this one spot made my mind wander to what it must have been like 1.000 years ago when the land was inhabited only by native peoples and wildlife. Then I jumped ahead to wonder about the significance of the river during the Revolution. When I got home. I found this book and it is one of the best book purchases I have ever made.If you buy one book on the subject. this is it. I am not even close to finishing this because there is so much information that needs to be read and understood with the right amount of time dedicated to the task. The Hudson is so rich with American history going back hundreds of years. its hard to fathom the impact it has had on the whole of the nation. The river was crucial to our success in gaining our freedom during the Revolution and it became home to many notable families who still maintain a presence in the area. And all this information is in addition to the ecology. A truly fascinating subject in every respect. And the Hudson Valley is just a minute portion (although a very historic portion) of a river that spans more than 300 miles beginning somewhere up in the Adirondack Mountains flowing to the bottom (us) and eventually out to the Atlantic.I feel inspired to finish this and then see as much of this historic waterway as I can manage.A beautiful. well-written. informative biography of the Hudson by a woman whose love for it is apparent on every page.Recommend.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. AmazingBy EeeeeLisaI read this book for a book club. My first impression was. "Wow. this book is Heavy!" But it sure is readable. informative and enlightening. I recommend this book even if you dont live near the Hudson as you will learn so much about the effects of polution and how lucky we are to be able to reverse some of its damages. not to mention all the fascinating historical information. It seems even Pete Seger learned a lot from this book!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Mary ShellyA wonderful book. about my favorite part of America.
