Description

Piano Lessons with Claudio Arrau provides an insiders view of the art of piano performance as exemplified by one of the great artists of the twentieth century. Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau devoted his life to the piano and its music. As a child prodigy; he gained national recognition from government officials in Chile; including President Pedro Montt; who funded Arraus education in Germany. Arrau studied in Berlin with Martin Krause; a pupil of Franz Liszt; and later immigrated to New York City where he taught and mentored a sizeable group of pupils while at the same time managing an international performing career. Arraus profound musical insight and unique style of teaching inspired his pupils and motivated them to teach his principles to the next generation of students. This in-depth study of Arraus principles and philosophy of technique and performance draws on information from published interviews with Arrau; from numerous interviews with Arraus pupils; and from the authors experience in studying piano with two of them. Transcripts of actual lessons given by Arrau and preserved on tape present in his own words a detailed account of his technical and interpretive ideas about five major works of the piano repertory. References to over one hundred examples from Arraus filmed recordings enable readers to observe the elements of Arraus famed technique in action.

An Inspirational Slice of Cake from the Portrait PartyBy JKI can recommend Portrait Revolution without reservation to anyone with a penchant for the visual arts in general and portraiture in particular. The book is a collection of selected pieces which were created as part of Julia Kays Portrait Party; an online project of over 1000 artists which began in 2010 and is ongoing. Its not exactly a how-to book; but with anecdotes and reflections on the creative process from the artists themselves; its more than just a coffee-table collection of artwork. The styles and mediums represented in these pages are incredibly diverse. One of my favorite features of the book is the showcasing of portraits done by different artists of the same subject; showing there are multiple ways to interpret the world.Julia Kays Portrait Party is an incredibly vibrant and warm community of artists; and this book is an deliciously inspirational slice of cake from the party. Just flipping through the pages makes me want to put pencil to paper and dip my brushes in paint.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Bravo!By William D. RogersExcellence has marked every stage of the Julia Kay Portrait Party experience. Why should the release of this communitys first book be any exception? I knew it would be a great testament to the hard work and good will of its creators all over the planet; but the level of care put into making this and making it right has surpassed even reasonable expectations. Another Bravo for Julia Kay and the community she has inspired and gathered together from around the world. What a privilege to have been welcomed into the group and to be a part of this project. Hats off (even Julias crazy hats) to everyone who worked hard making this dream a reality. This book is a must for anyone wanting to learn more about the joy of portraiture. I think if theres one thing Julia imparts to us all it is the knowledge that drawing is for everyone. Pull up a chair!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Variety is the spice of lifeBy BarbThis is a book show casing the work of the online group; Julia Kays Portrait Party; where artists from all over the world draw and paint portraits of each other. Diversity sums up this book. Diversity of artists; mediums; and techniques. You will find portraits in pencil; charcoal; oils; acrylics; watercolor; pastel; mosaic; digital; and other mediums. There is also a section by the artists on their thoughts about creating art and commentary by the author; Julia Kay. This is not a how to book. It is a book of appreciation for the many ways a face can be interpreted. Enjoy!
