From the 1950s to the 1970s; the work of Lloyd Wright; Gropius and Mies Van Der Rohe strongly influenced a generation of young Australian architects; who adopted modernist principles in their work. In Iconic Australian Houses: Three Decades of Domestic Architecture; Karen McCartney presents 15 significant examples of homes from this period; each designed by a different architect; that combine outstanding architectural principles and authentic interior decor.A detailed introduction places the period in social; historical and architectural context; before each of the selected homes is individually reviewed in an informed and engaging style. In each example the relationship between the architect and owner is discussed; as is the linking of the building to its site; materials and architectural detailing. The author has interviewed many architects and owners for their personal insights. Each study includes a feature on the interior decoration and a discussion of designers and manufacturers of iconic furniture; fittings and fabrics. Iconic Australian Houses features stunning photography; both panoramic and detailed; throughout. The homes from these three decades form a significant part of Australian architectural history and this book is a timely reminder of the need to preserve them as cultural artefacts.

Winter white designsBy Jbarr5Margeau Blanc A New Perspective on Winter White Knits by Margeau SobotiAfter watching the inaugural and all the women wearing white I had wanted to read this book.Patterns are simple yet elegant. My favorite is a beannie type hat where crown is worked in special design. Not all the pictures showed properly for me on my tablet but I was able to understand what was being shown.Think I like the accessories more than the sweater but those are really nice also. Each pattern starts out with color photo and a summary of the item.Skill level; yarn used; needles and notion along with measurements and gauge.Stitch glossary is enclosed for each pattern and then the directions; row by row-not charted directions.Easy to understand and I do not think anybody will have a problem making any of these as the details are so descriptive.I did not care for the sweaters hanging on a tree branch as they didnt just hang right. It does show how the item will look but Id rather see a model wearing them.Like that there are so many different methods for neck and sleeves and even length of sweaters. So versatile.Abbreviations are listed at the end. Something for everyone.I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. White on whiteBy AnonymouseWinter white is the theme of this knitting pattern book. 14 patterns for hats; shawls; sweaters and a cowl. The book uses written patterns and is suitable for anyone who can do a cable. None of the patterns is particularly unusual and I wish that the models had smiled more often instead of looking as if they had just swallowed a snowball.I received a review copy of "Margeau Blanc: A New Perspective on Winter White Knits" by Margeau Soboti (Dover) through NetGalley.com.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wearable knitting designsBy AmosI was able to read this book because of the kindness of the people at Net Galley. The book; in my opinion; is geared for intermediate or expert knitters. The designs are attractive and the pictures show them off nicely. I like that theyre all fairly basic designs; although there is enough change in stitches to give variety. I know the white garments were the theme; but think they could have been improved with a little color. I especially liked the crew neck sweater because of the extended back hem. The reason I believe this is for knitters with experience is because most of the designs call for smaller needles and more stitches to the inch than a lot of books with basic designs.
