The Language of Houses: How Buildings Speak to Us

[ePub] The Language of Houses: How Buildings Speak to Us by Alison Lurie in Arts-Photography

Description

Strange Material explores the relationship between handmade textiles and storytelling.Through text; the act of weaving a tale or dropping a thread takes on new meaning for those who previously have seen textilesmdash;quilts; blankets; articles of clothing; and moremdash;only as functional objects. This book showcases crafters who take storytelling off the page and into the mediums of batik; stitching; dyeing; fabric painting; knitting; crochet; and weaving; creating objects that bear their messages proudly; from personal memoir and cultural fables to pictorial histories and wearable fictions.Full-color throughout; the book includes chapters on various aspects of textile storytelling; from "Textiles of Protest; Politics; and Power" to "The Fabric of Remembrance"; it also includes specific projects; such as the well-known and profoundly moving Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt; as well as poetry mittens; button blankets; and stitched travel diaries. Offbeat; poetic; and subversive; Strange Material will inspire readers to re-imagine the possibilities of creating through needle and fabric.Leanne Prain is the co-author (with Mandy Moore) of Yarn Bombing; now in its third printing; and the author of Hoopla: The Art of Unexpected Embroidery. A professional graphic designer; Leanne holds degrees in creative writing; art history; and publishing.

Are You Ready to Rock? 5 Strong Stars But Still Some OversightsBy mistakesweremadeA surprisingly insightful biography of the artist who in my opinion was rockrolls geatest singer songwriter and - most of all - performer. The Rocker by Mark Putterford is rich with candid statements from primary sources - Lynott himself (the authors own interviews); family members; band mates; friends music industry associates. You can tell Putterford was a fan; but that does not keep him from describing details I imagine Phil Lynott wouldnt have minded never seeing the light of day. That compliment offered; many unforgettably great Thin Lizzy songs never even get mentioned; let alone discussed in detail. And my personal favorite T/L lp; Fighting; gets almost panned. The entire album is a "Best of" collection; but the biographer (may he rest in peace) spends more time describing its cover photo than any of the tracks on the disc. Not that I wasnt interested in that detail - I was - however I wanted to learn how Lynott Co came up with those great songs and too; any anecdotes about what went into recording them - Silver Dollar in particular not even listed. Many other classic cuts from the great Lizzy songography get nary a word either - Borderline; Running Back; Fools Gold to name but three of dozens. As a Lizzy die-hard; its a frustrating oversight.I realize there are only so many pages a book can have before it risks becoming War Peace about music; Lizzys songs tho are great rockers and/or ballads whose stories deserved telling. What inspired them? Howd the studio production process go?Quibbling on my part? Sure of course; so pardon it please and know that overall; The Rocker by Mark Putterford; is worthy of strong recommendation to Thin Lizzy fans - reading it theyll plenty of insight into this unforgettable music legend; and the all-time great band he fronted. (Which to this date has not even been nominated let alone voted into the RR HoF. Something that in my opinion invalidates that souvenir stands existence.)0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this is bad. Save your moneyBy Wendel CobbOuch; this is bad. Save your money; just read Phil Lynotts Wikipedia entry. Its more informative and written a hell of a lot better. I feel like Im lying; giving this one star. They dont allow for zero stars. Or negative stars. This is not a book. Its kindling for a trash burning.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Phil Lynott: Definitely the RockerBy CustomerI have been a fan of Thin Lizzy since their early days. Live and Dangerous still gets rotation often on my play list. I decided to read this book because although I was a big Lizzy fan I didnt know much about Phil Lynott. This book taught me a lot I didnt know about not only Phil Lynott rock god; but also about Phil Lynott the man. For years I had thought that Phil had died from a drug overdose similar to so may of his rock peers of the day but I learnt from this book that Phil suffered a painful drawn out death due to the drugs he has saturated his body and brain with.I highly recommend Phil Lynott: The Rocker for any person that wants to know not only facts and history about Thin Lizzy but more-so about a man who of many facets and who still remains one of my all time rock heros.
