The content remains superb; but the digitized format is atrocious; filled with errors and lacunae.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Failure of FormsBy yonder"The Stones of Venice 111"; by John Ruskin is a writing of his that critiques Greek; Roman; Gothic and Renaisance Art. He appreciates Gothic Art; especially the Christians Churches but states that it is not suitable for the other faiths. To him the Renaisance art work is grotesque because it does not have its orgin in the soul of man; but is dependent on science and ideas. The sculpture of fiqures on burial vaults have been replaced with curtains; and instruments of the decease; however if an angel or fiqure is present there in no facial expressions. He emphasizes the main ingredient of art is to include the soul in artistic work. There is to be a new art but it cannot come from theories of the past.A very good book with a lot of useful information.SPRArchaic and Classical Greek Art (Oxford History of Art)Nike of Samothrace Winged Victory Greek Goddess Statue; 11-inchA History of Roman ArtSigns and Symbols in Christian Art: With Illustrations from Paintings from the Renaissance (Galaxy Books)0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
