If you enjoyed the original novel... well; this is a painful experience. The themes of the original are either discarded or ignored in what I assume is an attempt to make the play appealing to a less literate audience. Of course I could be wrong--it could be a clever satire showing the tragic results of attempting to reanimate the corpse of another writers work.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Come; Scientist; Destroy!By Sallys daughterLiving outside of the UK is a depressing prospect when you hear of the lavishly wonderful productions at the iconic National Theatre in London. The innovative broadcast NT Live enabled viewers from all walks of life to see the award-winning productions as they were meant to be viewed: in high definition and in a collective audience. As a massive Benedict Cumberbatch fan; there was no hesitation to book tickets when I heard of Boyle and Dears new play Frankenstein. With Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating the lead roles of Victor Frankenstein and The Creature; the lively play adaptation presented Shelleys classic tale as a visual and aural masterpiece. Of course the success of the play hinges on the quality of the script; and Nick Dear undoubtedly delivers in leaps and bounds. Sure its not to-the-book in terms of every word or plot in Shelleys classic; but the ideas; settings and character dynamics maintain their strength; beauty and horror. This script is a great read for any fans of the play; and now that it is finished screening Down Under; it is nice to relive the magic and quench my withdrawals with this script book. The visuals are imprinted in my minds eye; so reading the script time and time again is a multi-sensory experience everytime...0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. AwesomeBy Sam FinleyTo be honest; I like this play a bit more than I like Mary Shelleys book. I love how they give more insight into the Creatures character: his development; his thoughts; his life; his relationships with people; and his emotions are all displayed well in this play. It was a very entertaining and intriguing read; and after re-reading the book; there are some inaccuracies; but not any that made me hate it or cringe. Also; I got to see the filmed performance of this at a local theater back in October and it was fantastic. If you ever have a chance when they do the yearly screenings; go see it. Its amazing to watch how they brought Dears rendition of Shelleys story to life.
