The Rise of the Diva on the Sixteenth-Century Commedia dellrsquo;Arte Stage examines the emergence of the professional actress from the 1560s onwards in Italy. Tracing the historical progress of actresses from their earliest appearances as sideshow attractions to revered divas; Rosalind Kerr explores the ways in which actresses commodified their sexual and cultural appeal.Newly translated archival material; iconographic evidence; literary texts; and theatrical scripts provide a rich repertoire through which Kerr demonstrates how actresses skillfully improvised roles such as the maidservant; the prima donna; and the transvestite heroine. Following the careers of early stars such as Flaminia of Rome; Vincenza Armani; Vittoria Piissimi; and Isabella Andreini; Kerr shows how their fame arose from the combination of dazzling technical mastery and eloquent powers of persuasion. Seamlessly integrating the Italian and English scholarly literature on the subject; The Rise of the Diva is an insightful analysis of one of the modern worldrsquo;s first celebrity cultures.

The market was on Sat. morning; I would see this very odd woman;Vivian Maier. I had no idea who she was or what she did however she was a standout in the crowd; very different in dress and bearing. She looked like a spy from a 1940s B noir movie. When she came to our stall I always wanted to make a photograph of her. I am a street photographer however she had an aura and I didnt want to mess with her.She once asked me if something was wrong I didnt know what to say. Get the Book you will not be sorry.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding print quality and beautiful selections from Vivians catalogue. Maier fans will love this.By RazumihinThe print quality is outstanding... among the best Ive seen in any photo book. The photos themselves are all excellent. I am so glad that John Maloof stumbled on Maiers work and took the time effort to present it so beautifully. Highly recommend this title for Maier fans.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
