The Old Stones of Kingston: Its Buildings Before 1867 (Heritage)

[audiobook] The Old Stones of Kingston: Its Buildings Before 1867 (Heritage) by Margaret Angus in Arts-Photography

Description

Grainger Town is as much an idea as it is a place. It is an important phenomenon; both historically and in todays debate about conservation in our cities and towns. Richard Grainger; a native of Newcastle and a builder and speculator unparalleled in the region; in the middle decades of the 19th century co-ordinated a radical re-planning that turned the town of his birth from an already handsome regional capital to one which excited the admiration of visitors from far and wide. Graingers particular achievement was to create a new commercial and residential heart within a historic town; a heart with consistent architectural quality starkly different from the piecemeal and eclectic character of most northern industrial cities. This book describes the evolution of the area and explains how recent planning initiatives have celebrated and exploited a unique urban landscape and injected new life into it.

Great historyBy BenBought this book for photos and information on Rock Hill College where my grandfather and his brothers went to school starting when they were about 8. Also wanted info on the flour mill. My grandfather and a brother operated a flour mill as adults and sold their flour via railcar to the Ellicott City mill who then resold it under that mills name. Found all the information; photos; and maps I needed.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the pictures are wonderful. I love the books about this small townBy Marianne H. HartEllicott City is my home town and one of the oldest small towns in the nation. The history is fascinating; the pictures are wonderful. I love the books about this small town; as well as its history; which goes back to the early 17th Century.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Stroll down memory lane.....By J. LindsayI gave 2 copies of this book to my father and brother for Christmas gifts. We lived in Ellicott City for several years and it was nice to look through it together. Ellicott City was a great town to grow up in and it appears that it still is.
