Not only does the author provide general information useful for a beginner. but he also takes it well beyond the fundamentals. especially if youre inclined to a painterly style. Many art instruction books can be confusing when considered in light of contradictory information in other books because the authors never clarifies how or why their process differs from other processes.If you only read one or a few books. it may not be confusing. but the more you read. the more contradictory recommendations you encounter. Mr. Rohm clarifies his intent. contrasts it with other options and clearly explains how "the painterly approach" applies to various aspects of the painting process.And the book is not just for those of us who strive for a painterly style. Demonstrations are in oil. pastel and acrylic. The sections on color are very thorough and the sections on composition. while not extensive. are helpful. I have read numerous art instruction books. So good I teach with it!By Joseph Melanccedil;onThis book is beautifully laid out with easy to read text and large color photos of the entire process of painting landscapes. It will be invaluable in showing and explaining to the studio and plein air painter the technical and esthetic parts of painting landscape including the creatures that inhabit it. Each chapter is presented simply and logically. I havent seen a better book on the market for the beginning to advanced landscape painter. Ive been teaching painting for many years and take my copy to my classes for recommendation to my students. Even if you are very experienced I feel Bobs book is worth having in your art library just to remind yourself what is important to know about painting .Joseph Melanccedil;on. Sarasota. I know if a book is good. if my wife takes them to read. I had shown her this book and then had to hunt for it to make this book review. Bob Rohm has wonderful impressionist oil painting in this book. His paintings are they type that I would like to paint like. That is way I bought this book to learn how he does it.
