The Plan of Chicago: Daniel Burnham and the Remaking of the American City (Chicago Visions and Revisions)

[DOC] The Plan of Chicago: Daniel Burnham and the Remaking of the American City (Chicago Visions and Revisions) by Carl Smith in Arts-Photography

Description

As well as play-makers and poets; playwrights of the early modern period were known as play-patchers because their texts were made from separate documents. This book is the first to consider all the papers created by authors and theatres by the time of the opening performance; recovering types of script not previously known to have existed. With chapters on plot-scenarios; arguments; playbills; prologues and epilogues; songs; staged scrolls; backstage-plots and parts; it shows how textually distinct production was from any single unified book. And; as performance documents were easily lost; relegated or reused; the story of a plays patchy creation also becomes the story of its co-authorship; cuts; revisions and additions. Using a large body of fresh evidence; Documents of Performance in Early Modern England brings a wholly new reading to printed and manuscript playbooks of the Shakespearean period; redefining what a play; and what a playwright; actually is.

The work was ahead of its time and surprisingly much of what was designed came to life and inspired city planning work around the world. It is also amusing how most of the precepts of The Plan of Chicago still apply today. The book is well written and it is the history of how the Plan of Chicago came to be.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting story that requires too much imagination to be really impactful.By MichaelAn interesting story. My only reservation is that the graphics are not clear and are sparse. It would benefit from more graphics depicting what was planned vs. what has actually been built.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tediously over-researchedBy NofoJake"The Plan of Chicago: Daniel Burnham and the Remaking of the American City." my fair citys fall 2009 One Book. One Chicago pick. provides an overly detailed account of Burnhams fin de siècle campaign to provide a comprehensive plan for reigning in the citys random. haphazard rebuilding efforts after the 1871 fire and providing a template of organization and synergy in an effort to create his vision of Paris on the prairie. The book is heavy on minutia and light on engaging material like historical anecdotes. but its full of great information for anyone fascinated by Chicagos past.
