The Practical Guide to Drawing Figures: [Artist's Workbook]

[PDF] The Practical Guide to Drawing Figures: [Artist's Workbook] by Barrington Barber at Arts-Photography

Description

A sequel to the award-winning The Black Composer Speaks (Scarecrow Press; 1978); this exploration of the creative world of African American composers traces the lives and careers of 40 talented individuals and; in their own words; provides perspectives on a world that has been slow to recognize their remarkable contributions to classical music. The discussion places the music of these composers within the greater context of Western art music; but analyzes it through the lenses of sociology; Western concepts of art and taste; and vernacular musical forms; including spirituals; blues; jazz; and contemporary popular music. Each chapter is devoted to an individual composer; who discusses his or her musical training; compositional techniques and style; and the composers personal philosophy as reflected in his or her music. A selected list of compositions for each composer is included; as well as a photo and sample of the composers "hand." Banfield offers unprecedented insight into the history and influence of the African American composer with this documentary; which will appeal to everyone from the music scholar to the general reader.

I really enjoyed reading this bookBy Denise CromptonThe authorrsquo;s appreciation of those who have come before her shines through in Carol Lee Andersonrsquo;s history of the Belknap Mill. She details the story of the way the Belknap Mill developed to produce quality products; taking us inside the minds of those who developed and perfected the machinery used to make hosiery. Having been raised in a ldquo;Mill Cityrdquo; in New England; I really enjoyed reading this book. Although it was a different city; many of the circumstances surrounding the growth and then decline of the textile industry are similar. As a result of her research; Carol reveals a story of the people of the area; the way in which they came together to work toward perfecting the intricacies of knitting socks; and the pride they had in doing so. As happened with many of the other mills in the area; when the Belknap Mill was no longer needed to produce a product; some people wanted to tear down everything from that era. But community members came together to fight against many set-backs to preserve the Belknap Mill and create a Museum to help preserve an appreciation of the accomplishments of the citizens of Laconia; NH. This book should be present on the shelves of high school libraries.
