There is no doubt that Rock n Roll had its beginnings in America. Artists such as Bill Haley; Little Richard; Jerry Lee Lewis; Gene Vincent; Elvis Presley and Eddie Cochran were the idols of the early British rock n rollers; as homegrown acts such as Tommy Steele; Lonnie Donegan; Billy Fury and Cliff Richard produced their own versions of this new music. But by the end of 1962; rock n roll was in danger of becoming extinct. The music charts on both sides of the Atlantic were overwhelmed by softer songs lacking the dynamism and raw power of the originators. Emerging from this panache of smoothness; the British acts of the Beat Boom rejuvenated and revitalised the music industry with their freshness and excitement. This is the story of those climactic years when Britannia ruled the airwaves across the world.

This story really showed the feeling of the people that I havent seen in other Images of America Books Ive purchased; regardless. Seeing not just buildings is a nice difference. You could see the character in a lot of the photos; which were borrowed or lended to the authors from most of those families. Whether its a group of hunters; a wise-cracking or smiling person in a photo; the less than typical rigid portrait; or even the photo taken of a local hanging; this gave a much larger sense of the world they lived in; and the kind of freedom and space people once had in a few ways we may not have now. It didnt feel pretentious and self-important but more human. The one gripe I have; and it is something I sincerely feel: the pictures werent as high-resolution or glossy; quality pictures as I would have loved to see. Otherwise the book is a solid softcover book with good binding and should last a long while.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Picture Album and Family LoreBy C. MowryI ordered this book because of my interest in geneology and my Aunt recommended it. I found many pictures of many ancestors including my grandfather; my great great great grandfather; etc. The book is comprised of photos with captions (stories) about each photo. As with her other book "Ozark Pioneers" many of the stories are handed down and are based around fact; not necessarily fact. If your family is related to the Laytons in any way or was friends of the family; it would probably be of great interest to you. The families included the Laytons; Whortons; Bollinger; Rittenhouse; VanZandt; Breedon; Pruitt; Cobb; Warner; Haworth; Smith; Coggburn; Hall; McClary; Stinchcomb; Pickett; Allen; Yandell; McFarland; and Branson (whom the town of Branson was named for.) The book covers the period between the late 1800s and the early 1900s in the Kirbyville/Branson area and documents the authors familys homesteading of the area. Since my father was a Coggburn; the book was of immense interest to me.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. More informationBy PoppyThere should have been a better description for this book. It did contain the promised photos; but little on history to put those photos into perspective; and the photos had primary meaning only if you were related to the few family names mentioned. I was expecting more of a history on the county and it was not there. The one useful item was a map that was taken from another book. The book should mention also that it inly really covered a bit about a couple of locales in Taney county and not ALL of Taney county.
