A fascinating mix of local legends who could be characterized as the right people; in the right place; at the right time arrived in Central Oregon during the past century and a half to make Bend the fascinating city it has become. Some of these peopleexplorer John Charles Fremont; publisher George Palmer Putnam; economist William A. Niskanen; and Worlds Greatest Athlete Ashton Eaton among themgained national prominence and even global stature. Others were and are more ordinary people who have done and continue to do extraordinary things in an extraordinary place; a small but singular city of some 80;000 souls astride the Deschutes River at the eastern foot of the Cascade Range.

The rich history of the city comes alive through the large array of photographs..3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. great historyBy optiGreat history for this city; long gone; and forever lost as the old mills and homes are lost to fire. Having grown up in this city; it is a struggle to maintain the old along with the new; and it is nice to see the documentation as seen in this book. Lots of photos; even I had forgotten.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy jdGood book.
