It surveys thirty-one important directors whose careers have included significant work with the plays of William Shakespeare. Ranging over more than a century. and a number of different countries and cultures. the Routledge Companion offers up a remarkable variety of styles and approaches. Each article is written by a different individual. usually a scholar. with specific expertise in the work of the director under discussion. This avoids both tedium and the bias inevitable in a book by a single expert. however fair-minded.There will be something here to please. to stimulate. to amuse - and perhaps. even. to horrify - any prospective director of Shakespeare. But. in the end. the Routledge Companion. in its breadth of coverage. offers tacit permission for each of us to find our own way to the heart of Mr. Shakespeares works. and to translate what we find for the audience we seek.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful.
