The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll

[audiobook] The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll by Christopher Knowles in Arts-Photography

Description

Art historians have long been accustomed to thinking about art and artists in terms of national traditions. This volume takes a different approach; suggesting instead that a history of art based on national divisions often obscures the processes of cultural appropriation and global exchange that shaped the visual arts of Europe in fundamental ways between 1492 and the early twentieth century. Essays here analyze distinct zones of contact--between various European states; between Asia and Europe; or between Europe and so-called primitive cultures in Africa; the Americas; and the South Pacific--focusing mainly but not exclusively on painting; drawing; or the decorative arts. Each case foregrounds the centrality of international borrowings or colonial appropriations and counters conceptions of European art as a "pure" tradition uninfluenced by the artistic forms of other cultures. The contributors analyze the social; cultural; commercial; and political conditions of cultural contact--including tourism; colonialism; religious pilgrimage; trade missions; and scientific voyages--that enabled these exchanges well before the modern age of globalization.Contributors: Claire Farago; University of Colorado at BoulderElisabeth A. What for many could be perceived as a giant leap from the deabauchery of sex. drugs and rock nroll to the sanctity of ancient (and not soancient) mystery cults which celebrated our essential connections with the "powers that be". is presentd as a seamless extention of our inate ability and "need" ashuman beings to participate in and enjoy life to the fullest. Music. by whatever form we experience it. is not a spectator sport but an invitation to join in the dance. When we FEEL the noise. we resonate with the harmony of the spheres. and are truly integrated within the unfathomable chain of being. I must admit that when I first looked through the book. I thought "yech!". After reading "The Bushman Way of Tracking God" by Keeney . I felt I had to explore The Secret History. I found the two books to be a whole greater than the sum of its parts. This was a very enjoyable mind and body experience.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. High weirdness on the music scene. CranowOne tour de force book that cover the real history of rock and roll all the way from its historic beginnings in Egypt. The cult of Isis and Osiris took on many forms as it moved to Greece. Ecstatic music and feasting occurred and it found its way in the Eleusinian mysteries and Dionysian mysteries. The book traces the evolution of these cults into the modern day rock and roll.
