The Good and the BeautifulBy Christian SchlectThis volume will be primarily appreciated by those interested in the intertwined and art-filled lives of Bernard Berenson and Sir Kenneth Clark. European paintings; especially those of early Italy;are always near to the exchanges; but chatter about travel arrangements;visits; and mutual friends often is central. Berensons Italian estate of I Tatti; now held by Harvard; is the backdrop to much of the activity described in the letters. The book is finely edited and annotated by Robert Cumming; a person closely sympathetic to--and knowledgeable about--the two letter writers. Accompanying information; including informative biographical sketches of many of the people mentioned in the letters; supplied by Mr.Cumming is essential to a full understanding by the non-expert of both the letters and the two correspondents.A possible correction for a future edition: I think the the biographical note for Jacques Aldebert de Chambrun (p. 519) confuses a family relationship to a Speaker of the House of Representatives. His wifes brother did not marry Alice Roosevelt. His wifes father (Speaker Nick Longworth) did.3 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I would not recommend. Does the print edition have picturesBy Martin BaenningerVery disappointing. Disjointed; with no real thread to hold it all together. Lots of laquo;insiderraquo; talk that is difficult to comprehend for someone not from their world. I would not recommend. Does the print edition have pictures? They might help; to illustrate what is being discussed.3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant!By KermitSmashing!
