"Notes for Flutists" : Necessity for FlutistsBy Rich Lupo Flutes and Piccolos"Notes for Flutists" is destined to become the most valuable and well-used resource for flutists of the 21st century. The premise of Kyle Dzapos work is that a musician must "gain a more complete picture of the works and the context in which they were written;" a sentiment shared at every level of flute pedagogy. The formerly difficult task of researching these major works; hours in the library sorting through the index of an old composers biography; days spent guessing at a rudimentary theoretical analysis; and the futile search for others program notes; inevitably resulted in the student surrendering to "play from the heart" as Dzapo says. Instead "Notes for Flutists" provides a student; not yet ready to undertake the serious research required; the ability to gain the academic knowledge to understand the history; context; and theoretical analysis of each of these most famous flute solos. Their resulting "informed" performance will only be improved in its authenticity and meaning.Kyle examines 35 of the most popular; most studied works in the flutists repertoire. The selection is well thought out; the standard favorites are all here. These are the pieces which absolutely need explaining; the pieces that college flute students are expected to understand academically. Each piece features adequate biographical information on the composer; historical background; and most importantly theoretical analysis; which in particular is both highly useful for performance; and extraordinarily difficult for most undergrads to unearth themselves. Concise and clearly written; nevertheless in the absolute model of perfect prose; the five to ten pages on each work successfully paint the picture of each score for the academically informed performance of the flutist. It is an easy to use guide that will replace the ambiguity of our own inferior research efforts with Kyle Dzapos admirable scholarship; yet still inspire the advanced student to look further into more sources; more information; and ever deeper understanding of our art and the composers art. This book is the absolute staple of a flutists library; and a valuable addition to the resources of any wind player; band director; or conductor.A must-have book.
