Michel Saint-Denis was one of twentieth century theatrersquo;s most influential directors and theorists. This book combines his seminal Theatre: The Rediscovery of Style with material from Training for the Theatre; newly edited to create a work which moves seamlessly from theory to practice.Theatre: The Rediscovery of Style collects five of Saint Denisrsquo; key lectures; given during his time in America; and perfectly encompasses his synergy of classical theatre and modern realismTraining for the Theatre is a key practical resource for actors; directors and teachers alike. It covers crucial areas such as understanding a playrsquo;s context; training schedules; improvisation and dealing with stage space; as well as a section on Saint-Denisrsquo; use of masks in actor trainingTheatre: The Rediscovery of Style and Other Writings benefits from Jane Baldwinrsquo;s new biographical introduction and annotations; that put Saint-Denis into context for a contemporary audience. It brings a wealth of inspirational material both to the rehearsal space and the classroom.

When it speaks of the Drop in Center of Over the Rhine it only deals with the more famous works for the homeless of Mr. Buddy Gray. Mr. Gray was an important figure; not knocking him. However; like most modern era reporting of Over the Rhine history it neglects the prior work of Drop In Centers on Vine Street devoted to inner city youth. I speak of the original Over The Rhine Drop in Center on 1329 Vine Street with Robert (Ricky) Simpson as director. Reported in The Cincinnati Post March 29; 1972 (last paragraph.) The youth based Over The Rhine Drop in Center did some great work that should not be forgotten. I know; I was there. As a libertarian of political ideology; I am not fond of government programs. But as waste is one side of the coin; there was another that should be discussed as freely and honestly. Some of the program spending of that era did some remarkable things for people who usually do not get much positive societal attention.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great bookBy Jerome P. SmileyGreat book about the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati. 3 of my 4 grandparents lived here and it shed light on what that was like.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
