Are your students baffled by Baudrillard? Dazed by Deleuze? Confused by Kristeva? Other beginnersrsquo; guides can feel as impenetrable as the original texts to students who lsquo;think in imagesrsquo;. Contemporary Thinkers Reframed instead uses the language of the arts to explore the usefulness in practice of complex ideas. Short; contemporary and accessible; these lively books utilise actual examples of artworks; films; television shows; works of architecture; fashion and even computer games to explain and explore the work of the most commonly taught thinkers. Conceived specifically for the visually minded; the series will prove invaluable to practitioners an students right across the visual arts.Single-handedly responsible for the influential and ominous notion of lsquo;the gazersquo;; quoted by everybody yet fully understood by few; Lacanrsquo;s work can be difficult to grasp. Going back to basics; this introduction guides the reader through Lacanrsquo;s key concepts by looking at art from the Mona Lisa through to Bridget Rileyrsquo;s paintings; and by looking afresh at key works discussed by Lacan himself; from Holbeinrsquo;s famous The Ambassadors to Velazquezrsquo;s Las Meninas. Making sense of Lacanrsquo;s sometimes convoluted style; this highly readable introduction to one of the most frequently quoted thinkers also explores the reasons why human beings make - and look at - art.

Take advantage of this guys knowledge while you canBy BrianIm currently a student of Bob Mintzer at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. His piano playing is truly one of a kind; he hears things that other musicians dont. Theres some great information in this book; especially for the price. If youre new to piano and music theory in general; you should probably start with something a little more basic before purchasing this. This is an intermediate level book that helps the aspiring jazz musician add a little more color and voice to their piano comping and open your ears to the possibilities of each chord. He leaves a little room for each musician to take the exercises and etudes in their own direction; transpose it to another key; apply alternate scales; etc. But if youre motivated; I encourage you to dive right into this and see where it takes you. Great book!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent bookBy K.K.I am really enjoying this book. It consists of a series of well written etudes to help the novice jazz pianist develop essential solo and ensemble piano skills. There are clear explanations of the harmonic and rhythmic objectives for each "tune" and they cover a broad spectrum of useful jazz progressions and rhythms. My estimation is that this book is best suited for an advanced beginner; or intermediate level; pianist interested in learning basic jazz chord vocabulary and comping rhythms but who already knows music theory; especially chord construction.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not for small hands; or beginners.By J. McCartneyThis is a book of 22 etudes. Id suggest first using Bill Cunliffes Jazz Inventions; which is a book of 50 etudes that start out easier than those in this book. This book has lots of chords requiring spans of 9ths and 10ths; which are either questionable or beyond my reach.
