[DOC] Theatre by David Mamet at Arts-Photography

Description

Clement Greenberg (1909ndash;1994); champion of abstract expressionism and modernismmdash;of Pollock; Miroacute;; and Matissemdash;has been esteemed by many as the greatest art critic of the second half of the twentieth century; and possibly the greatest art critic of all time. This volume; a lively reassessment of Greenbergrsquo;s writings; features three approaches to the man and his work: Greenberg as critic; doctrinaire; and theorist. The book also features a transcription of a public debate with Greenberg that de Duve organized at the University of Ottawa in 1988. Clement Greenberg Between the Lines will be an indispensable resource for students; scholars; and enthusiasts of modern art.ldquo; In this compelling study; Thierry de Duve reads Greenberg against the grain of the famous criticrsquo;s criticsmdash;and sometimes against the grain of the critic himself. By reinterpreting Greenbergrsquo;s interpretations of Pollock; Duchamp; and other canonical figures; de Duve establishes new theoretical coordinates by which to understand the uneasy complexities and importance of Greenbergrsquo;s practice.rdquo; John Orsquo;Brian; editor of Clement Greenberg: The Collected Essays and Criticismsldquo;De Duve is an expert on theoretical aesthetics and thus well suited to reassess the formalist tenets of the late American art critics theory on art and culture. . . . De Duves close readings of Greenberg . . . contain much of interest; and the author clearly enjoys matching wits with lsquo;the worlds best known art critic.rsquo;rdquo; Library Journal

Removing the veneer of politeness with regards to acting. directing. and writing for theatre. the short essays in this book reexamine those "truths" that have been long-held by those in the craft since the Modern era began in the mid-Nineteenth Century. and questions: What is a play? What does acting consist of? Why have texts--especially those classics by poets and playwrights long-since departed--become tools to be manipulated rather than a means to communicate a story? Finally. whose voice is most important: the critic or the audience member? In my earlier days. I scoffed at the "accusations" hurled by Mr. Mamet in "True and False" concerning the frivolity of actor training and methods to achieving a great performance. "Theatre" is a continuation of his thoughts with an even more concise and profound treatise. compounded by fifteen years of experience and thoughtfulness about the art of the business and the business of the art.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Some fascinating observationsBy David Wade SmithA book on theatre by David Mamet is bound to contain some pithy observations on the nature of theatre. acting. and directing. And from that POV this book doesnt disappoint. But Mamet can be a bit pompous at times. He is. IMO. rightly antagonistic toward directors. actors. and theatre schools that push specific methods of working and scorn other. competing systems--since what is important is to keep the audience engaged. and all else should be in the service of that objective. If youre a person who works in theatre. youll probably enjoy this book. Its also. thankfully. economical and not very long.
