[ebooks] Theatres of Portland (Images of America) by Gary Lacher; Steve Stone at Arts-Photography

Description

On June 26; 1809; John McKnight and 30 other residents of Pine Township petitioned the courts of Allegheny for the formation of a new township. In the November term; permission was granted; and Ross Township was born. However; the story does not begin there. In the 17th and 18th centuries; Ross Township was settled by early Native American warriors and hunters who used the land as a hunting ground. Ross Township includes the tales of Casper Reel and his family; the first white settlers North of the Allegheny; Simon Girty; traitor and renegade of the Revolutionary War; and the infamous Biddle Boys escape from prison with the wardens wife and escapade through Perrysville in the winter of 1902.

Great MemoriesBy Anthony Sol.... i have never been to portland. never lived there and have no personal connection to the city but i wanted to check out their theatre history. i love looking at the theatres themselves. especially the old movie palaces that have somehow managed to survive. Portland apparently had a very rich theatre history with at least 5 grand downtown venues. each seating close to 2.000 people at one time. i love my memories of theatre-going. especially in the make-believe atmosphere of an old theatre. the images of america series of books on cinema history give us great photographs of these mini-palaces and i hope to collect them all.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Theatres of Portland (Images of America)By Barry GoodkinThis is one of the best of the Theatres of Cities. The photos are all very sharp. The authors have presented in eash theatre profile a time line in text and pictures. Although the theatres of Portland may not seem to be of interest to every reader not from Portland the development of the theatres from stage to combination stage and film. silent to sound and from studio operation to independents is similar to the history in other cities of similar size to Portland. Bravo to the authors.
