1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bumps and HollowsBy Christian SchlectA book for those with an interest in the American painter Thomas Hart Benton. Those desiring to learn more about Jackson Pollocks early career will also learn from reading this effort by a knowledgeable university art educator. Justin Wolff. (Pollock at one point was Bentons student.)Mr. Benton in many ways was an unattractive personality. which makes this somewhat unevenly written biography more difficult to glide through. Arguments with friends. artistic disputes. excessive drinking ran through his long life. His favored approach. Regionalism. did not win the race for a new direction for American art.However.Thomas Hart Bentons most significant paintings and murals still find many admirers. including myself. and his body of work remains an important chapter in the history of the art of our country. Professor Wolffs book helps to explain a difficult but creative man.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Needed insight on an important American originalBy Lochlan LongstriderThoroughly enjoyed this biography of Benton. My only complaint is that the reproductions of his paintings are too small and not of sufficient number to be representative of his skill.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Thomas Hart BentonBy murray ngoimaThis book is a valuable resource for someone seeking to understand the "art world" in the United States in the 30s and 40s (and later). It is a thoroughly researched and fascinating focus on the thread of one life story interweaving with its larger context. Thomas Hart Benton is revealed as a complex and complicated person. described with both compassion and objectivity.
