This entertaining history of Cuba and its music begins with the collision of Spain and Africa and continues through the era of Miguelito Valdeacute;s; Arsenio Rodriacute;guez; Benny Moreacute;; and Peacute;rez Prado. It offers a behind-the-scenes examination of music from a Cuban point of view; unearthing surprising; provocative connections and making the case that Cuba was fundamental to the evolution of music in the New World. The ways in which the music of black slaves transformed 16th-century Europe; how the claves appeared; and how Cuban music influenced ragtime; jazz; and rhythm and blues are revealed. Music lovers will follow this journey from Andaluciacute;a; the Congo; the Calabar; Dahomey; and Yorubaland via Cuba to Mexico; Puerto Rico; Saint-Domingue; New Orleans; New York; and Miami. The music is placed in a historical context that considers the complexities of the slave trade; Cubas relationship to the United States; its revolutionary political traditions; the music of Santeriacute;a; Palo; Abakuaacute;; and Voduacute;; and much more.

It is fun and quirky; the instructions and illustrations of the steps are very clear. Some instructions are repeated throughout but I like that. I hate having to page back to find out information that is relevant to the project I am working on.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is a good beginners bookBy Julie GreenThis is a good beginners book. Alas. I am more advanced in mosaics and this book covered the most basic beginning items for beginners. I do recommend it. however. for those who need to learn about the tools and methods to implement their mosaic art.
