[ebooks] Timeless Cities: An Architect's Reflections on Renaissance Italy (Icon Editions) by David Mayernik at Arts-Photography

Description

Intimate Metropolis explores connections between the modern city; its architecture; and its citizens; by questioning traditional conceptualizations of public and private. Rather than focusing purely on public spaces—such as streets; cafés; gardens; or department stores—or on the domestic sphere; the book investigates those spaces and practices that engage both the urban and the domestic; the public and the private. The legal; political and administrative frameworks of urban life are seen as constituting private individuals’ sense of self; in a wide range of European and world cities from Amsterdam and Barcelona to London and Chicago.Providing authoritative new perspectives on individual citizenship as it relates to both public and private space; in-depth case studies of major European; American and other world cities and written by an international set of contributors; this volume is key reading for all students of architecture.

RichThis book offers a visual journey through the history of one of Miamis oldest and most independent neighborhoods. Beginning with the early days of pioneer settlement and continuing up through modern day (2009) the authors tell the story of Coconut Groves birth and growth through 127 pages of black white photos with brief captions. This book is primarily visual and is by no means a comprehensive history of the area. However; if you have a genuine interest in Florida history; this will make a nice accompaniment to any collection of local lore.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It was good knowing how some of the familiar streets got their name.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Where is the Barnacle?By DC Book AngelA delightful look at the history of this quirky Florida community-- full of characters whose descendants still play an important role in the civic vibrancy of Miami-Dade County-- we only wish that there were better pictures of the Barnacle-- a mystery as to how such an iconic building could have received such short shrift.
