This book comes from a very fine music educator with exceptional experience; who has common sense and a real understanding of what a beginning teacher should know. The book puts into print issues that are widely discussed at conventions and at conferences; and that are common knowledge for the experienced teacher; but that are not covered in a music education class. It is a plain and simple book; written in a language that is easy for anyone going into the profession to understand. Two things are particularly disappointing about this book; one of the the Postcard series. The photos themelves are very interesting; but as with other Arcadia books; the print quality is a bit lacking. A perfect example is how much sharper and clearer the photo on the back cover is compared to the fuzzy version of the same photo inside the book.The second disapointment is the authors reliance on non- Mackinaw material to pad the book; including old newspaper quotations. Rather than additional relevant comments and information about the photographs; the author uses random; irrelevant quotes from the newspaper to fill space; and then pads the book even more with numerous pages about ferries; the Mackinac Bridge; St. Ignace; Mackinac Island; and even Cheboygan. About half of the book has basically nothing to do with Mackinaw City. Theres even a photograph of a boat dock vending machine that sells MMs. The caption lists all the candy thats available in the machine. Give me a break. The author should have stuck to the topic (Mackinaw City); and done a better job on it.(For an outstanding book of the ferries; see Les Bagleys Michigan State Ferries book in the Arcadia Images of America series.)All that said; if youre a Mackinaw City buff; there are a lot of great (though somewhat fuzzy) nostalgic and historical images in this book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Old Postcards/Photos Mackinaw History!By A Michigan Down-State "Fudgie"Much has been written about Mackinac Island and the Mackinaw Bridge but little on Mackinaw City itself. I learned that Mackinaw City played an important role in the development around the Straits of Mackinac and its story needed to be told once again! This is a neat book with lots of old postcard images. Chapter One; "Days Gone By;" shows vintage views of Mackinaw City main streets; the old State Tourist Park; Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse; and early parades. Chapter Two; "Pe-Quot-E-Nonge;" the Native American word for "Old Mackinaw" is all about Old Fort Mackinaw; now Colonial Michilimakinac. Chapter Three; "Hospitality and Tourism;" has many of the old hotels/motels/restaurants and souvenir shops pictured. Chapter Four; "Navagating the Straits;" shows postcards of the old rail car ferries and the automobile ferries that plied the Straits of Mackinac before the Mackinac Bridge was built. The recently retired U.S. Coast Guard Cutter "Mackinaw" is also shown along with an interesting image of a frozen "Edmund Fitzgerald." Chapter Five; "Mackinac Country" adds a bit of history around the area including St. Ignace; Mackinac Island; the Mackinac Bridge (early construction photos); Cheboygan; and Bois Blanc Island.These Arcadia Local History books are interesting; informative and just plain neat. Mackinaw City Mi (postcard History Series)By AJ KeystoneI am an avid history buff .found this book to be thoroughly enjoyable. Although I had never been to Mackinaw City it made me want to visit. I loved the early history; newspaper accounts pictures too. Now that I have visited; it helped me to understand the area its early inhabitants - the book made it a much more interesting fun visit. I also liked the information about early inhabitants settlers as well as early commerce - the descriptions helped with my understanding of this lovely place; its people architecture. Nice work!
