With over 220 striking photographs and insightful commentary; this Vietnamese design book captures the essence of Vietnamese style and art. Vietnam has long captured the imagination of travelers; both real and armchair. It is an appealing country; filled with natural beauty; tranquil village life and fascinating cities. Vietnam also has an inimitable architectural and interior design style; the product of its rich cultural heritage and the various influences of Chinese; French and other Western colonialism. Vietnam Style is an exploration of the balancing act between traditional vernacular design and architecture and the outside influences of colonialism. The unusual and striking new design styles created by melding these elements are a true cultural kaleidoscope of Vietnam today. Chinese-style shophouses; temples with Indian influences; Thai-style palaces; French Colonial civic and domestic buildings; and the variety of tribal and native wooden houses present in Vietnam Style offer an intimate look into the vibrant; yet virtually unknown world of modern Vietnamese architecture and design.

Painfully turgid writingBy PSHPictures are excellent. and the captions are very informative. As for the actual book. at first I thought it might have been a poor translation. Instead. it is written by somebody who has mistaken complex sentence construction for "deep thoughts". Im an academic. and I have to read a lot of this sort of stuff for work. and I dont enjoy having to suffer through this for my recreational reading. If it wasnt for the content and the pictures. I would have given it one star. thats how painful the writing is.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. If youre planning on building a Japanese home in America...By MaNgA MaNThis is the book for you. There is also another one. "Building the Japanese House Today" by Len Brackett And Peggy Landers Rao which is an excellent companion book. These books delve into the actual building of a home the "Japanese" way. from choosing woods to joints. to mats to tea rooms to sample floor plans to.... infinity and beyond! Everything you need to know about Japanese home architecture is covered or so it seems... (I say that because Im not finished with either but am using them side by side). Excellent material. What else can I say.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
