The author James Schlett has an incredible ability for giving these long deceased luminaries a personification that made their motiviations and attitudes feel fresh and alive. The book is meticulously researched from personal correspondences between the subjects of the book allowing us to witness the inner workings of a whos who of important Boston area figures. A very enjoyable and fascinating read overall! Definitely recommend1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well researched; and an invitation to read more about transcendentalism in general and the participating philosophers themselves. The book would have benefited from copyediting; to catch typos and deal with occasional snarls in the narrative. Also; given that William James Stillman is the central figure; its odd that his first wifes suicide gets just two sentences; and that there is no mention of his second wife for the last two decades of his life. Still; a valuable contribution.
