Essential Companion to Stanislavskis WorkBy Jane BrodySharon Carnickes book; Stanislavski in Focus; is an absolute necessity for any serious student of acting. Many students dont read Stanislavski at all; but pick up third and fourth hand misinformation; and proceed to believe that they know who the man was and what he postulated. The problem is exacerbated for American readers of Stanislavskis towering work (now given a superior translation by Jean Benedetti; as An Actors Work) in that they have little knowledge of the influence the Communist Revolution and the Stalinist regime had on the publication and the word choices that Elizabeth Hapgood; the original American translator was forced to use. Looked at through the prism of Soviet Materialism; the colorless words; lsquo;super-objectiversquo;; lsquo;objectiversquo;; lsquo;taskrsquo; and other such terms make sense. The language is not that of artists; it is that of factory owners. Ms Carnickes work opens an entire field of thought concerning Stanislavskis work.
