Schnitzler was a 21st Century sensibility who was way out of line in his time; and suffered personally for his challenging the received wisdom of his time. I doubt seriously that some of these plays could be produced in America today. We can thank the Germans; Austrians and Tom Stoppard for their efforts to bring Schnitzlers sense and sensibilities into our times. Women please note: I know of no greater womens champion in literature. He was a friend of the Working Girl; as well as the neglected; discarded wife.
