John was there (largely) before any other writers and got interviews with folks that few others talked to; so his source material is amazing. Among New Orleans music scholars John is highly regarded and well loved. While there are other excellent books on the subject by such folks as Jeff Hannusch and; of course Rick Colemans landmark bio of Fats Domino; Mr. Brovens book is definitely the first one to read on this subject.Rhythm and Blues in New Orleans0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. New Orleans Artists RockBy MsteeI read the book in the 80s as a young adult 3-4 times and truly appreciate the history of New Orleans Rhythm and Blues. The book is an informative history of great artists and composers; who struggled to maintain the culture in New Orleans. Great composers such as AL REED (a.k.a. RUTH AL); RUTH DURAND (a.k.a. RUTH AL); DR. JOHN; EARL KING; DAVE BARTHOLOMEW; LEE ALLEN were significant singer/songwriters.AL REED is famously known as the singer/songwriter/composer of "99 44 100/PURE LOVE" sung by the artist AL REED; "REAL GONE PARTY" sung by the famous artists RUTH AL; "KISS TOMORROW GOODBYE" originally sung by the artist DANNY WHITE and JOHNNY WINTER; "MESSAGE FROM MARIA" sung by the famous artists DAVID RUFFIN and JOE SIMON.In addition; the following major tracks: "KISS TOMORROW GOODBYE"; "NEVER TELL YOUR FRIEND"; "MAKE HER MINE"; "AM I THE FOOL"; "DONT BE ASHAMED TO CRY"; "MEN OF WAR"; "DANCE EVERY DANCE"; "WOULD YOU LOVE ME"; "LONG TIME NO SEE" listed on "THE FRISCO RECORDS STORY" reissued by the U.K. Record Labels: ACE RECORDS and KENT RECORDS.The Frisco Records StoryThanks to all the Musicians; Singers; Songwriters and Composers of New Orleans; who impacted the entire Music Industry.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
