But; like all photography texts; its a bit pricy. Unfortuneately; there is no "complete" text on the subject; that will teach you how to "see" what you want to photograph (believe me; I have looked). You have to learn this subject by "doing"; repeatedly; and studying the masters. Basic info; awful picturesBy Can0nFanIve been an amateur photographer for about 11 years now and I always like reading up on compositional techniques to improve my skills. Ive read several excellent books on composition (Freemans "The Photographers Eye" amongst others) and while Zakia and Pages book provides decent; albeit basic info on compositional techniques and considerations; the photographs provided to illustrate the concepts are awful. Yes they do minimally illustrate what the authors are saying but the photos are often incorrectly exposed or just plain uninspired snapshots -- there is nothing interesting or artistic about 80% of the photos in this book. I guess I expect if the title of the book is "Photographic Composition: A Visual Guide" I should be floored by the quality and creativity of the photos presented instead of being left wondering what editor allowed the authors to use the photos that they chose. My advice is to sign out this book from a local public library; read it and return it. If you are thinking of buying it; consider other options.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Images Demonstrate How Not to Do It!By Glenn NI was quite stunned to find so many poor to mediocre images used as examples of good composition in this book. Many of the concepts are solid; but the photographs used to demonstrate the concepts were generally not very good.When I came across the "Shared Moment" photograph on page 195 of a horribly lit subject in harsh lighting; I expected the underlying text to describe why this photo was totally ineffective. Instead; it described how "this image worked well..."Most pages contain inspirational quotations below the photo and text. The problem is that the quotes usually have nothing to do with the concepts presented on the page.I would not recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about composition.
