[audiobook] Voyage of The Slave Ship: J.M.W. Turnerrsquo;s Masterpiece in Historical Context by Stephen J. May in Arts-Photography

Description

Boston Light - A must read for nautical history buffsBy Shirley RichardsonThis is a book filled with everything you want to know the oldest continuous working lighthouse in America. Dr. Snowman is the 70th Keeper of Boston Light with the first 69 having been men. It is the last manned Coast Guard light station in the country. She has been the Keeper for 10 years and along with her husband; Jay Thomson; has done extensive historical research on this distinctive piece of Americana. Yoursquo;ll discover the historical significance of the first established lighthouse in colonial America in 1716 as well as modern technologies and challenges in maintaining this Boston Harbor landmark. The book also has rare photographs of the island and informative about the classical 1859 Fresnal lens that remains in operation. Dr. Snowman and her life as a lighthouse keeper has been seen on Chronicle; This Old House; and featured in Yankee Magazine. Most recently; Boston Light is being highlighted in a U.S. postal service commemorative series. There are so much data in the book that it can be brain overload to try to absorb it all at once. It is better to spread out the reading over several time periods and then keep the book handy for quick referencing anything you want to know about the lighthouse. Dr. Snowman is also a sought-after speaker; I bought my book after her guest appearance at the Tufts Library in Weymouth; MA. Her passion for having this unique position was evident throughout her presentation. The myriad facts and figures in the book came to life with her enthusiastic stories and personal experience on the island. Highly recommended for readers interested in history; New England; lighthouses; sea stories.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great!By Stephen R DeMoratLots of history in this book.
