Not in same league as Tess Duberville.By bambooI would give any novel Thomas Hardy wrote at least three stars just for his superb language; his historical accuracy; and his enthralling portrait of Wessex. But the characters in this novel just dont compel empathy (e.g. the Festus Derriman character is too decerebrate to take seriously and Anne Garland proves as decisive as the princess bride). At the end of the day; the story is about as effective as Napoleons invasion of England.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Historical HardyBy PhedippidesThomas Hardys historical novel about the Napoleonic threat to Britain in the early Nineteenth Century. The time different; the feeling of impending war; disruption of normal life; and yet human life proceeds; is always contemporary. Just a beautiful story of people that so real you miss them at the end.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love all Thomas Hardy books but this one is taking ...By D. ShorttLove all Thomas Hardy books but this one is taking a long time to get through. I am enjoying it anyway because of his descriptive writing. I can "see" the scenery and people.
