Watkins Glen Racing (Images of Sports)

[audiobook] Watkins Glen Racing (Images of Sports) by Kirk W. House; Charles R. Mitchell in Arts-Photography

Description

Established in 1806; the town of Wawarsing is located in the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains in Ulster County. The town is comprised of many small hamlets; as well as the village of Ellenville. The abundance of mountain streams provided electricity to run factories; and in the early 1900s; these communities were flourishing. The Delaware and Hudson Canal opened in 1828 and provided a venue for factories to transport goods. Following the close of the canal in 1898; the Ontario and Western Railroad took over; shuttling summer vacationers from New York City. The vintage postcards in Wawarsing provide views of the Delaware and Hudson Canal; the Ontario and Western Railroad; and a glimpse back to a quieter time when the mountain and valley landscape provided picturesque locations for lovely hotels and boardinghouses.

I went to school with several of his sons. I had the privilege of meeting Cameron in the spring of 2006 at the racing library that he established. This book brings together how Cameron originally brought about road racing to Watkins Glen and how he has influenced the sport for most of his lifetime. The number and variety of vehicles raced at the Glen are pictured in this book. Not everyone is cut out for racing. but most of us enjoy the blend of human and machine that is involved in operating an automobile. I had the privilege of moonlighting as Wall Street Journal deliveryman in Atlanta many years ago. I enjoyed steering my Mazda GLC with my left thigh while folding and inserting the papers in plastic bags with my hands. A childhood with a 1953 Willys Jeep used as a farm tractor also was the source of many memories. A seven year stint in floral delivery brought out another type of man/machine coordination. I will leave the racing to the younger set. I have had my share of speeding tickets. thank you.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One of the historical starts of sport car motor racing in the USBy JWThis book represents the historical beginnings of sport car racing in the United States. Watkins Glen started in the streets. as the GIs where returning from W.W.II and importing foreign sports cars. Soon the streets of Watkins Glen were not suited for road racing and a closed race track was built. This book commemorates the start and transition of these years. with many pictures. I gave it three stars only because I want to read more about the behind the scenes on how all of this took place.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great memories of the GlenBy HandymanHaving grown up in Watkins Glen. this book brought back many memories of watching the cars and the people on the streets of the village.
