The collection; interpretation and display of art from the Peoplersquo;s Republic of China; and particularly the art of the Cultural Revolution; have been problematic for museums. These objects challenge our perception of rsquo;Chinesenessrsquo; and their style; content and the means of their production question accepted notions of how we perceive art. This book links art history; museology and visual culture studies to examine how museums have attempted to reveal; discuss and resolve some of these issues. Amy Jane Barnes addresses a series of related issues associated with collection and display: how museums deal with difficult and controversial subjects; the role they play in mediating between the object and the audience; the role of the Other in the creation of Self and national identities; the nature; role and function of art in society; the museum as image-maker; the impact of communism (and Maoism) on the cultural history of the twentieth-century; and the appropriation of communist visual iconography. Must have book for experienced photographersBy Graf von Foto"Way Beyond Monochrome" is a very fitting title for this enormously valuable reference book for monochrome. wet-process photography. The blurb in s description says it well:"Photo Techniques Magazine stated: All our readers need to know about this very useful book. Indeed. there is no other compendium that is as in-depth as this for the beauty and magic of fine-art black-and-white photography."The magazine quoted (now called "Photo Technique." singular) is a magazine for experienced photographers. "Way Beyond" is geared to people with experience in the medium. not a tutorial for people wanting to begin. That said. it can be of value to others who are willing to dig in and not be intimidated by the volume of material.The book indeed goes beyond the famous series by Ansel Adams. and the updated edition "The Ansel Adams Guide" by John Schaefer (books 1 and 2). and I know of no better single resource on the subject. The reader of this review is invited to read the table of contents to appreciate the extent of coverage. My bookshelf has about two dozen books on the subject. but if I could have only 2 books. they would be "Well Beyond" and the much more highly specialized book "Controls in Black and White Photography" by Richard Henry. which digs more deeply into real. scientific measurements to draw conclusions on materials. chemicals. and myths.Even though the book is geared for experienced photographer. there is much information that can be of valuable to others. such as the specifics of human vision and image processing within the eye and brain. Another is the choice of print density and its relation to the illumination used for display. Many experienced photographers could profit from these as well!Numerous hours have been spent reading various parts of the book. and the hours were profitable. Having so much information in one place with a good index is very valuable. An excellent Technical book with a touch of the MachismoBy GraflexThis book is one of the best Ive read on the technical side of film photography. The printing quality is excellent...high quality paper stock and sample images are nicely reproduced. Lots to read here. I would consider this a must have for any photographer interested in learning more about the analog side of photography. very well written. Just about every aspect of capturing and producing a traditional photograph is covered in this hefty volume. I cant say I have found any substantive in regard to technical information I would like to see added to the text of this book. but there are a few images that could have been easily omitted. Im not a prudish guy by any means. but some of the images are more than just a little odd. Photos of women in handcuffs etc. are really not something that I would expect in a book of this type. Perhaps Ive missed the humor? If you can over look a touch of machismo and I can. this is an excellent book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The depth of information is incredibleBy JeffThis is an incredibly detailed book. I was a bit taken aback when it came in the mail. When first paging through the book. I was blown away by the depth of content. Everything is covered in detail. from shutter speed testing to getting the best out of every exposure and every print.Since getting this book I have read a little over have and I have gained a wealth of knowledge. I am a photographer from the "digital age" and I love shooting photos with old cameras on film and printing in a darkroom. Since the world is now digital I have found it incredibly hard to find quality information on processing in a darkroom. I have talked to "old timers" locally. but I cant get all the info I need from them and its not all in one source I can reference over and over again.This book gives me all the info I need to keep me busy in my darkroom learning for years to come. The content of the book is for the darkroom practitioner. however they do talk about hybrid processes. which I am also exited to try. as I have some color negatives I want to print in BW.
