Description

Chris Rock. Jamie Foxx. Steve Harvey. Dave Chappelle. Some of the biggest names in American entertainment today all appeared at Raymond Lamberts club All Jokes Aside; the legendary Chicago showcase for African-American comedy; early in their careers. This insightful memoir grew out of Lamberts critically acclaimed 2012 Showtime documentary; Phunny Business; and tells the story of his life as seen through the lens of All Jokes Asidemdash;its successes; failures; and lessons learned.By the late 1980s; Lambert was earning a six-figure salary as an investment banker on Wall Street; but dreamed of starting his own company. With zero experience; an equally committed partner; and a little borrowed money; he opened All Jokes Aside; and before long was helping to launch some of the biggest names in comedy. This is story of Lamberts journey; a behind-the-scenes look at the world of show business; and an inspiring tale for any would-be entrepreneur. Chock-full of cautionary tales both humorous and dramatic; revealing details on the early careers of top performers; and tangible guidance on how to build a business from the ground up; this book is a much-needed recent history of black entertainment and a powerful memoir of entrepreneurial ups and downs.

Review

This is my home town and it is very old with alot of great history. I have not found many books about Marshall so this was a treat. I have other books in this series so I knew it was going to be light in substance. That is to say they are small books so limited in coverage. I know most of the history of Marshall; but have seen few pictures from the past. I loved seeing the town in the late 1800s and early 1900s and marveled at how so much of it looked the same as I remembered it in the 1960s. Marshall was part of Jay Goulds railroad empire with the Texas and Pacific railroad car shops in the 1850s.The Civil War;victorian architecture;the many famous people all seem to be covered in this little book. I loved it. Of course I would love more; because there is so much more about this wonderful town Marshall;Texas.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. InformativeBy Colin DavidThe book was informative but not as detailed as I was hoping. Good book in its own right; though. Paints a coherent; albeit; barebones; timeline of the City of Marshall.
