Since the early 1900s; Silver Lake has been a magnet for iconoclastic writers; architects and political activists. Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright; who designed the Hollyhock House for socialist and oil heiress Aline Barnsdall; drew a wave of visionary modernists to the area. Local civil rights advocate Loren Miller spearheaded the fight against housing discrimination. Silver Lakes Black Cat bar and Harry Hays Mattachine Society were central to the early gay rights movement. Literary artists Anis Nin and James Leo Herlihy made the neighborhood their home; as did other notables like first lady of baseball Effa Manley and Hobo Millionaire James Eads How. Michael Locke and Vincent Brook chronicle these and other people and places that helped make Silver Lake the bohemian epicenter of Los Angeles.

Jodellehre ist bullyBy doug wiseA clearly-written history of the provenance of yodeling. its incorporation into a wide range of music-making in 19th century America. and its decline into a joke in modern American culture. Wise describes the physiology and acoustics of yodeling and isolates the elementary yodeleme. With this element in hand he goes on to identify three species of yodeling. With reference to this taxonomy he proceeds to recount -- with telling details and anecdotes -- the history of yodeling and its meanings in American music. A very lively and informative history. Readers will enrich their experience by accessing the cited recordings on YouTube. The virtuosity of the DeZurik sisters is not to be missed.
