Intrigued by my observations I have simply driven to Kalama several times now for just exploring. Location; location; location! Advantage! Wedged between the Columbia River and foothills of the Northern Cascade Mountain range; Kalamas development began just because of its location. A river for transportation and huge amounts of timber attracted early settlers. The actual source of the name "Kalama" is questioned; from the name of a native settler from Hawaii to two possible derivations from Native American names; however; in 1870 the local director of the Western Division of the Northern Pacific Railroad named the settlement Kalama and that was that. This location also prompted initially a rail road ferry from Goble; Oregon across the Columbia River to Kalama which enabled trains to continue northward to Tacoma; Washington. And not to mention salmon; early demand for and plentiful supplies led to fishing to feed workers and canneries to export. Again; the location on the Columbia was vital. This book details the history of this town and its residents determined survival and prosperity.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I love this bookBy Cody W. TraubI love this book.
