Really helpful framework for appreciating and understanding postmodern musicBy smartyfunI got this book because I wanted to get an understanding of postmodern music from a theoretical point of view. I really enjoy modern classical music but find it hard to articulate why i like it or even what it is that defines this "new" music. I thought that this book may assist me in my quest and it didnt disappoint me.Jonathan Kramers posthumous book is a thoroughly researched; comprehensive work which is written more in the style of a thesis than a music theory book. It is extensively referenced both in terms of published literary sources and also with its numerous examples of music. It is an intellectual challenge to read but it is all the more rewarding for this.Kramer provides a list in the first chapter which he proposes are the characteristics of postmodern music. These 16 statements or traits provide a re-occuring background and structure to the book which are referred to as the chapters unfold. They dont define postmodern music; but provide a framework for understanding and appreciating it - and this is exactly what I have been looking for.As you delve into the book; these characteristics are discussed in more detail and in various contexts. This is helpful because the statements are mostly short and cryptic; for example; one quality is that postmodern music "embraces contradictions." Once you have got further into the book then these traits are expounded and put further into context. One significant point that Kramer makes it that music postmodernism isnt defined by when a piece was composed. So it isnt music performed after the period of modernism; for instance. There are some sections which include music analysis which requires an understanding of music theory; but there is so much more to this book as it covers philosophy; economics; politics; technology; and other topics so you can skip the music analysis if this doesnt appeal. Unfortunately; the illustrations of musical notation in this book are generally in small font; so are difficult to read and interpret even if you have the theory skills. I havent seen the Kindle version; but assume it could be an even worse problem.I really like this book. It is intellectually challenging and is definitely not a light read (for me; at least) but there is an encyclopaedia of information about postmodern music which will keep me occupied for a long time.
