Sir Peter Lely (1618 ndash;1680) was a painter of Dutch origin; whose career was nearly all spent in England; where he became the dominant portrait painter to the court. Lely studied painting in Haarlem; where he may have been apprenticed to Pieter de Grebber. He arrived in London in around 1641; which was marked by the death of Anthony van Dyck in December. His early English paintings; mainly mythological or religious scenes; or portraits set in a pastoral landscape; show influences from Anthony van Dyck and the Dutch baroque. Lelys portraits were well received; and he succeeded Anthony van Dyck as the most fashionable portrait artist in England. Lely played a significant role in introducing the mezzotint to Britain; as he realized its possibilities for publicizing his portraits. He encouraged Dutch mezzotinters to come to Britain to copy his work; laying the foundations for the English mezzotint tradition..

SOMETHING TO DO IN SAN FRANCISCO WHEN YOURE DEADBy Anthony Solobviously; no one could possibly enjoy Theatres of San Francisco as rapturously as i did. during the 5 years i lived in that foggy; swampy city by the bay i went to nearly all these theatres. in fact; going to them was pretty much the only worthwhile pursuit i enjoyed during that accursed time. theres even a shot of the Cannery Theatre here; where i first worked when i arrived in 1971; or the Gateway in the Embarcadero where i saw nitrate 35 MM prints of all the Hollywood classics for the first time. it was a dung-grey and very lonely time for me; but the theatres were sublime. there are many here that had come and gone before i arrived; and even a few that would arrive thereafter; but in any event they are all included here. if you found yourself a captive of San Francisco in those days; you will find this volume nostalgic and informative. if not... well; count yourself amongst the fortunate.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Architectural Beauty lost!By CustomerOf days gone by!! My comment on "Theatres of Oakland" just about covers it; but...By CustomerI have to say that Mr. Tillmanys book on San Francisco theatres finishes in a dead heat with the one about Oaklands theatres. It was very hard to put down; once I started; so I didnt...put it down; that is. Cover to cover in one night; the same with the Oakland book; I kept thinking; "just one more page; and then Ill turn out the light and go to sleep." I rarely lie to myself like that; but I didnt regret going through the book in one sitting. Its a valuable reference that will find a prominent place in my library and gather a lot less dust than most of my other books.--Preston Allison
